In February of this year MKN & Associates (MKN) received an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of California for the Jim May Park Denitrification Biofilter Project located in Santa Maria, California. MKN is proud to have assisted the City of Santa Maria with this innovative denitrification biofilter project using wood chips, one of the largest systems of its type designed and constructed in Central California. MKN’s design provided a low-cost, automated system to reduce nitrates in agricultural tailwaters from the adjacent storm channel, and ultimately in the groundwater basin. An on-site shallow groundwater well is used to maintain flow in the biofilter when the channel is dry. In addition to cost control, operational flexibility, aesthetics and safety were prioritized as the project was located in a City park, adjacent to an elementary school and surrounded by neighborhoods.
